Architecturalism 1. Adolescent. 2009
Part of my experimentation with a style based loosely on cubism, using architectural forms in rather abstract ways.
The carcasses of old churches and castles were the primary inspiration for this painting because I was drawn to the colour and texture of the buildings.
During this time I was painting work of a more personal nature that dealt with mental health and emotional pain, and for this piece I wanted to capture the struggles of the transition between childhood and adulthood.
The angular forms, muted tones and crusty texture are a metaphor for the inner torment as harsh, merciless and consuming. The anguished expression half hidden behind a door evokes painful shyness and retreating to safety, but the exposure of the face for the viewer to see suggests bravery and the willingness to be seen and understood.
